Absolutely fantastic sound editor, completely FREE! .I can personally recommend the Beta version 1.3.8. I've used it for over a week now, with no problems. . Audacity beta 1.3.8 is solid & stable. Outstanding software.It's got a background "noise-removal" that'll knock your socks off! Makes for imaculate sound - clean enough to eat off of! Other favorites include the "equalizer" (for adjusting bass & tone), the "leveler" (for keeping the volume levels steady), and "amplify" (over-rides the "leveler", which is useful for tweeking specific points.) This software actually works stunningly well. I would be willing to pay $50 for this software but it's completely free.
Just be aware of the accompanying "LAME" files. It's a silly name, and I don't know what it stands for. But it might be necessary for Audacity to work. You may not need them, but you might. So just know they're there.
